KALAMAZOO, Mich.- September 11, 2017- Pse Event Housing will host a “Day of Service” to honor Scott Matzka’s battle with ALS on September 21 beginning at 9 a.m.
Pse Event Housing will honor Scott Matzka as he battles ALS on their annual “Day of Service.” In collaboration with Wedel’s Nursery, Florist and Garden Center, employees from Pse will donate their time to landscape Matzka’s home in Mattawan, Michigan.
Scott Matzka, a Michigan native, had a successful career as a hockey player at the collegiate and professional level throughout his life until 2012. He was very active and lived a healthy lifestyle.
Two years later Matzka first began to notice symptoms of cramping, stiffness, twitching, and tremors of his hands and arms. After continued symptoms, Matzka visited many doctors and went through months of testing before seeing a neurologist. After even more tests, he was officially diagnosed with ALS.
ALS, alternately known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurological disease that attacks muscular nerves that control voluntary muscle movements. This causes muscles to gradually weaken until they eventually atrophy and are unable to be used at all. Matzka now struggles to feed himself and is confined to a wheelchair.
Matzka has a wife, Catie, a son, Owen, 5, and a daughter Reese, 7, fighting beside him. He cherishes every moment spent with his family making as many memories as possible for them to carry forward after his fight ends.
ALS is a fatal disease that usually claims the lives of those diagnosed within three to five years after the onset of symptoms. Usually, patients lose the ability to talk and breathe, causing an end to their fight. There is no cause, no cure, and no treatment for ALS.
In a TEDx Talk from earlier this year, Matzka says, “There is no playbook to living with ALS.” He has chosen to fight and spread awareness of this rare disease while he still has a voice. He created an organization called My Turn to help spread awareness and tell his story. Pse would like to help him tell his story.
