60+ Selects Hockey Alumni Play at World U17 Hockey Challenge

If you watched a game at the World U17 Hockey Challenge this past week in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario you saw more than one former Selects Hockey player out on the ice. Teams from Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic, the United States, and Canada all carried a handful of Selects Alumni on their roster. Together, 66 alumni of our Selects Hockey program hit the ice at the 2016 international competition. The first U17 Hockey Challenge was played in 1986 and the event has since seen more than 1,600 of it’s participants selected in the NHL Draft.

The gold medalists, Team Sweden, had 16 Selects Hockey alumni on their roster alone. Team Canada sent three teams to the international competition, Team Canada-Red (8 Selects alumni), Team Canada-Black (8 Selects alumni), and Team Canada-White (6 Selects alumni). Sweden defeated Team Canada-Black in the final by a score of 2-1. Team USA didn’t medal in the event, but finished with a winning record at 3-2. They carried 13 Selects Hockey alumni on their roster. Team Finland (6 Selects alumni) finished with a 2-3 record and Czech Republic (9 Selects alumni) finished 1-4.

Many of our Selects alumni were individual standouts in this tough international competition. The USA’s Joel Farabee finished 5th in points among all players with 4 goals and 2 assists in five games. Adam Bokvist, a Swedish defenseman and Selects alum, tied for 3rd in goals with 4. His teammate, forward Oskar Back, tied for the tournament lead with 5 assists in 5 games. Aidan Dudas from Team Canada-Black finished just behind Back with four assists of his own.

We believe the international experience we offer these players at a young age helps prepare them for world class events like the World Hockey Challenge and we love to see the proof in action! Congratulations to all of our former players who were selected to play in the event and special congratulations to our alumni on the gold medalist Sweden team!
